Failure analysis is a systematic process used to investigate and determine the root cause of a failure in a product, component, or system. It involves examining the failed item, collecting relevant data, and using various analytical techniques to understand why the failure occurred. The goal is to identify the underlying causes, which can then be addressed to prevent future failures and improve reliability.<\/p>\n<p>My first thoughts on failure analysis &#8211; let&#8217;s look at some of the problematic local timber footbridges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Temple footbridge is still closed (for details see below)<\/li>\n<li>Berry Hill footbridge has been partially replaced<\/li>\n<li>Ashford Lane footbridge closed in 2024 collapsed in June 2025<\/li>\n<li>Black Potts footbridge &#8211; closed in June 2025 and awaiting survey<\/li>\n<li>Myrke footbridge &#8211; awaiting survey &#8211; and could be a very expensive problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span data-huuid=\"10959654928017200882\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Temple Footbridge<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a pedestrian footbridge near Hurley,\u00a0 has been closed since May 2023 due to safety concerns related to its wooden structure. <\/span><span data-huuid=\"10959654928017200397\">The bridge, which was opened in 1989 and is known as the longest spanning hardwood bridge in Britain, exceeded its estimated 30-year lifespan, and a structural survey revealed decay in critical elements.<span class=\"pjBG2e\" data-cid=\"82eb5be3-fa97-4bfc-9257-b21782893222\"><span class=\"UV3uM\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From &#8216;The Times&#8217;\u00a0 <span class=\"YrbPuc\">26 Apr 2025\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>Temple Bridge, a beloved Thames crossing, remains closed with repair costs estimated at up to \u00a38.6 million, more than 20 times the original construction cost.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Black Potts footbridge<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; currently closed but further information can be found <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/dhwnews.com\/?p=1688\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UNDER CONSTRUCTION<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNDER CONSTRUCTION Ashford Lane footbridge: A significant section of Ashford Lane footbridge over the Jubilee River in Dorney has collapsed.
