simply rotten"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ashford Lane footbridge &#8211; simply so rotten in more areas than you can possibly imagine &#8211; that it collapsed into the Jubilee River.\u00a0 What an embarrassment!\u00a0 I think there is a need for some honesty, openness and transparency here.\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>I cannot understand how a degrading timber footbridge can be closed for many months until it actually collapses under its own weight, and only then is a warning notice published.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0I will wait patiently for answers.<\/p>\n<p>So who is going to take the blame for the Ashford Lane footbridge problems (and all the others)?\u00a0 Will it be the designers, the material suppliers, the constructors &#8211; or maybe even the accountants?\u00a0 The images below record the rotten timber &#8211; unable to support even its own weight after only about 25 years.\u00a0 (The Jubilee River had a design life of 50 years.)\u00a0 The loss of strength and consequential structural failure is so extreme that the main horizontal supporting beams have become disconnected and displaced.\u00a0 The two main beams are completely separated from the deck, balustrade and handrails.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>In my opinion the use of mortice and tenon construction in this timber footbridge has facilitated water ingress at the joints.\u00a0 Thus the design of the joints has in fact accelerated the decay of the timber.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 In many places there is no visible evidence remaining of the joints &#8211;
