and the EA is about to spend more money on this never-ending problem.\u00a0 Can they get it right this time?\u00a0 I am not confident.<\/p>\n<p>The Myrke embankment was constructed to contain and convey flood water at a level above the adjacent land while protecting the nearby houses.\u00a0 \u00a0Colin Martin&#8217;s evidence at the 1992 Planning Inquiry stated that the embankment would increase the level of protection to 195 additional properties in Datchet.\u00a0 You can read the relevant page below<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2814\" src=\"https:\/\/dhwnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/P4-summary-p-11-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dhwnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/P4-summary-p-11-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/dhwnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/P4-summary-p-11-300x413.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dhwnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/P4-summary-p-11.jpg 743w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The embankment did not work properly because both the embankment and the underlying gravel were permeable.\u00a0 As the flood water rose, it just came up through the drains.<\/p>\n<p>The Myrke embankment in Datchet was originally constructed from &#8216;as-dug&#8217; material around the turn of the century (1995-2002).\u00a0 The embankment was on the brink of failure in 2002\/03.\u00a0 \u00a0On first use of the Jubilee River at only 2\/3rds capacity the embankment suffered severe water penetration and scouring.\u00a0 It is fair to say that the new embankment was on the verge of collapse.<\/p>\n<p>You can see below how the embankment looked in 2004 &#8211; and the Myrke embankment needs fixing yet again!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Sub-standard embankment design and construction, \u00a31.3m repair costs, a \u00a32.75m out-of-court settlement, and still the embankment steadily degrades.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">THE QUESTIONS<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Can the EA get it right this time, who pays and how much?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ANSWER<\/span><\/strong>: We will just have to wait and see.<\/p>\n<p>END<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Myrke embankment in Datchet has never been right &#8211;
