Surrey County Council to be split into two?

Posted on July 10, 2025July 10, 2025 by ecwlarcombe

The government wants areas like Surrey to become Strategic Authorities — led by an elected Mayor.

To do this, Surrey must first reorganise into unitary councils, which combine county and district & borough services into a single level of government.

Surrey currently has 12 councils and is proposing to reorganise into two new councils – East Surrey and West Surrey.

You can find the consultation (open until Tuesday 5th August) for the Surrey County Council Local Government Reorganisation by starting here

I have two concerns as follows:

What happens to the existing Surrey County and Borough debt totalling about £5.5bn?

What happens about the SCC commitment (2019) of £270m towards the River Thames Scheme and other county flood alleviation partnership funding contributions?

END
