The not so good image below records the broken stub (just above centre) of a large branch about 400mm in diameter that just broke away from an exceptionally large tree. The branch fell about 20m before hitting the ground and exploding into many pieces. This type of timber (Black Poplar) appears to be ‘brittle’ rather than tough. Nobody was hurt – but be warned – these things happen with little or no warning. Stay alert in wooded areas.
